Cat's Back
It’s known as the Cat’s Back due to the hill resembling the appearance of a hunched, sitting cat.
The Cat’s Back is a circular walk rolling gently upwards onto the bulk of the Black Mountains in South Wales, the Cat’s Back offers lush wide views over the English border, the hill also makes for a bracing walk for fit dogs.
When you have conquered the climb, you could head into nearby Michaelchurch and visit the Bridge Inn. This friendly inn is situated in a lovely spot, next to the Escley Brook. Enjoy alfresco dining in their pretty garden. They have a varied menu and a particularly good selection of ciders. The Bridge Inn is also a dog friendly eatery.
Cat's Back Route
Route details 7.9km approx: 2 hours
1. Start at the Black Hill car park. From the car park, take the stile to left of the gate and follow track up ridge. After about 500m, the ridge becomes sharper, with a series of rocky steps. Keep along ridge in same direction.
2. After 800m, the ridge levels out, though it is still rocky for a few hundred metres. Continue straight, then slightly to the right. The trig point is just visible on the skyline. At the trig-point the path turns left along the left side of dew pond.
3. Walk along the path through the heather. Look out for path to the left before you reach the head of the Olchon Valley which has been on your left throughout the walk.
4. Take the left-hand path which leads you down into the Olchon Valley, effectively double backing on yourself with the Cat’s Back where you’ve walked now on your left.
5. Descend into the valley and into the trees, following the path, eventually you will meet a minor road.
6. Turn left and walk along the road for about three quarters of a mile until you see a brown sign for the Black Hill picnic site to the left. Turn left and you’ll end up at the car park where you started your walk.
