Old Black Lion

The Old Black Lion Inn is privately owned and personally managed by the resident proprietor Dolan Leighton who looks forward to welcoming you as her guest.

An historic 17th Century Inn, it is situated close to what was known as the Lion Gate, one of the original entrances into the medieval walled town of Hay-on-Wye. It is believed that parts of the building date back to the 1300’s with features that are similar to those in the old Castle building suggesting that part of the original structure may have been built at the same time as one of the Castle building phases. The Old Black Lion certainly has a colourful history and it is reputed that Oliver Cromwell stayed at the Inn whilst the Roundheads besieged Hay Castle, which was then a loyalist stronghold.

Our team of talented chefs make serve up a mouth-watering menu every day, and use the finest seasonal and local produce to create new specials on a weekly basis.

The Old Black Lion has 10 quality en-suite bedrooms situated in either the Main Building, the Coach House or the Cottage. The rooms provide all modern amenities with direct dial Telephones, WiFi internet access, Hairdryers, colour TV’s, Tea & Coffee making facilities and our famous Teddy Bears to keep you company.
