Waterworks Museum

Whatever your reasons for visiting the Waterworks Museum – Hereford, there is so much more to see than just big engines and industrial heritage.

Whatever the weather, this museum has something to offer all visitors including family groups with children (with free admission for under 16s).

Family Day Out
Come with your children and trace the history of drinking water from the cave-dwellers up to the present day through wonderful working engines, superb display panels and guide literature.

Displays in the exhibition area are at a low-level so everyone can enjoy them. There are audio-visual displays, and hands on exhibits to pick up, touch and use.

Visitors can enjoy the wide open landscape and explore the Noel Meeke Heritage Water Park; here children and adults can interact with full-size devices for lifting, pumping, moving and filtering water which have been used down the generations. In a totally safe environment children can have immense fun and learn at the same time the difficulties of obtaining water in days gone by.

Industrial Heritage and History
On an in-steam family day visitors can see up to 30 working engines and pumps, including the 1895 triple expansion steam engine which stands two storeys tall. Many of these engines are the oldest examples of their type working today, and most can be seen pumping water.

The museum is concerned primarily, but not exclusively, with the public health story of providing water for public consumption. It is also a time capsule of social history and is home to Herefordshire’s only permanent exhibition to the City of Hereford in WW2.

Educational and Group Visits
Most educational visits to the Waterworks Museum are provided free of charge.
Introductory talk and guided tour available for group visits.

The museum is also a perfect site to hold meetings for community clubs and organisations.
