Locally Sourced Picnic - Local Produce Perfect for any Event

With lockdown easing, we started making plans for an outside locally sourced picnic to take advantage of this incredible April weather and to have the chance to catch-up with a few pals and enjoy some local produce from Herefordshire’s local producers and suppliers.

We are passionate about Herefordshire and local business so we sourced all the ingredients locally, and from as many inspirational local suppliers as possible from Herefordshire and the surrounding counties.

Locally Sourced Picnic

A locally sourced picnic..

All local suppliers have a unique start to their journey with a consistent undercurrent driving them, which is that they are focused on providing the best quality products, with a strong connection and love for their local community.

We found that the experience, interaction and quality that comes alongside dealing directly with local suppliers is unrivalled compared to sourcing your products from a supermarket.

Our fabulous locally sourced picnic was made even more special by being able to devour food and drink from local producers in Herefordshire.!

Found in the city centre of Hereford, you can find Charcuterie nestled in the bustling Butter Market.

A significant amount of speciality meats are on offer, and the team will gladly host a small tasting and share their passion before you decide on your order.

Their party box platters are an ideal size for a group event, and exactly what we ordered.

Inside said party box is a spread of their favourite cuts, olives and a tasty slab of focaccia from Peter Makes Bread. A party box indeed.

If you are craving for an afternoon away, then absolutely spend some time in the beautiful town of Hay on Wye where you will find nothing but picturesque rolling hills, a cosy village town, and friendly locals to welcome you.

Parking can sometimes be challenging but worth it for the experience.

Hay Deli is nestled in the centre where you can get your weekly favourites from locally sourced fresh vegetables to the butchers selection, to all the cheeses you can physically carry. Perfect place to hit for a hamper or big event.

When you open the door to Mousetrap Cheese, you enter a cheese heaven where everything you see is cheese and you are more than ok with that. Speak to the friendly staff who are happy to take you through the significant array of cheeses and help you choose some tasty combinations. Then just sit back and let the compliments roll in for your epic spread.

The team champion local producers and you can find plenty of complimentary products like Peter’s Yard Crackers and Two Farmers Crisps!

We picked a healthy portion of Dorstone, Cashel Blue, Kirkgams Lancashire, Brie de Meaux and a Manchego. Money well spent. Plus I didn’t know whether I told you but I have an addiction to cheese, it’s only mild though……

At one of Herefordshire’s leading butchers and delicatessen, you will only find quality, locally sourced artisan food and drink.

The team at Legges in Bromyard are proud to work closely with several carefully chosen local suppliers and producers, supporting the local community and preserving their very special talents.

The team strongly believe that eating seasonal, local produce nourishes our bodies. Following the year’s natural rhythms, enjoying seasonal food and drink at its best is not only best for us, but also for the future of our planet.

A lovely experience compared to your average supermarket, I picked up some fresh fruit and veg.

Also, I may have accidently picked up one of their brie, bacon and lettuce wraps for a classic 3.30pm snack and I can say that wrap was a cracking wrap. I am still thinking about it. Plus such great value and so many options to choose from!

What a visit! We would recommend first hitting the café for a takeaway coffee and potentially one of The Nests homemade brownies to keep you fuelled on your way round.

Browse through the farm shop, showcasing locally sourced produce and products.

Outside you will discover items to spice up your garden, and finally the deli, where your eyes can happily feast on all the handmade quiches, sausage rolls and juicy pies.

Also a great pit stop when you are on a long summers day cycle with friends!

Leading the charge to reinstate the scotch egg as Britain’s favourite snack and by golly they are succeeding!

All their recipes are totally original, devised and created by hand. These balls are delectable with flavours that will blow your mind.

We decided on a classic mac, a ploughman’s, an old stager, and a smoky joe scotch egg. They were tasty and really hit the spot.

The team at Three Fruity Ladies stand out from the crowd by using only the finest home grown and locally sourced ingredients, handmade in the heart of Herefordshire.

They make jams, chutneys, ketchup, pickles and marmalades, so your toast, cheeses or burgers have the perfect accompaniment.

What started off as gifts to friends from leftover fruit and veg from the garden, has grown into this award-winning company, selling their products at local farmers markets, shops, and local food fairs, shows and festivals throughout Herefordshire, Shropshire and the Welsh Borders!

We picked the spiced pear chutney and orgasmic cider apple chutney and they paired very nicely.

At Peters Yard, everything begins with their 45-year-old sourdough starter, fermented for 16 hours, and crafted in small batches without shortcuts or artificial ingredients for award-winning flavour and crunch.

These crackers go with pretty much everything from chicken liver parfait, daring canapes, exotic salads, all kinds of saucy dips, cheeses and charcuterie.

Truly passionate about the Herefordshire countryside that has enabled them to grow award-winning potatoes, founders Sean and Mark met one night for a pint of local beer and a packet of crisps.

They hatched out a plan of how to honour and celebrate these potatoes and that night the Two Farmers brand was born.

Their ethos is inspiring. They grow, harvest, store, cook and pack their crisps so they can maintain control throughout each process to ensure that we ultimately receive the finest crisp.

Sean, Mark and the team are committed to giving back to the environment, which is why they keep our road miles low and use 100% compostable packaging.

Their aim is to promote Herefordshire as a county of outstanding agricultural achievement, and home of some of the tastiest crisps!

We picked a large packet of the lightly salted, a bag of the Hereford bullshot, and a packet of the salt and cider vinegar, and we cannot wait to try the rest!

We all need good bread in our lives, and we knew exactly where to go for award-winning bread across the Midlands, and that’s Peter Cooks Bread. A fresh loaf of sourdough – pop it in the basket! A mouth-watering square of focaccia – no brainer!

Peter and the team are proud to be able to collaborate with local brewers, cider makers and cheese makers to be able to use their great produce in their breads.

Peter feels that the friendships and connections he has built with the local food suppliers and producers plus the overall passion for Real Bread is stronger than ever in the campaign to reconnect the local community with the quality food that we need.

You’ll be happy to find their bread and pastries on the shelves of delicatessens, farm shops and butchers across Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Shropshire, as well as on the menu of many of the local cafes and restaurants.

You can also visit their online shop and have products delivered to the door – ding dong!

For any event, you need that one showstopper piece that will demand the attention of every eye. We made the right choice in ordering a cake from Sarah McNally Bespoke Cakes. It was so beautiful, we almost decided against eating it. But of course we did, and it was luscious.

Sarah bakes the most incredible buttercream creations that will leave you smiling on the inside for days.

Based in Bath, you can easily order celebration cakes online and collect from Bath, or for wedding cakes, please contact directly through the website to start talking designs for your special day!

We ordered a 4 layer chocolate cake with Nutella buttercream filling, covered in vanilla buttercream and a floral design to finish. There were no words.

A lot of credit has to be given to Relish The Moment who inspired this whole picnic event. Their beautiful boxes are lovingly made and crafted to include tasty food that is locally sourced.

Great for any event, lunch with colleagues, local picnics or a lazy Sunday morning in bed with your special someone. All delivered to your door.

We headed straight to Lulu Plants for our flowers, who are based in Hereford and supply beautiful plants and flowers for events and everyday life.

We shared our theme and a couple of ideas with Louise who then created the perfect setting with a relaxed vibe with her flowers and pampas grass. We were in pampas grass heaven.

A shout out to Taste Herefordshire who delivered a few of our picnic products with next day delivery – life savers!

The teams mission is to champion Herefordshire local producers, and provide 100% locally sourced products to the community, delivered straight to your door.

Their hampers are the perfect locally sourced picnic and are filled with Herefordshire produce. They also make great gifts for friends, family or colleagues. Or, because you absolutely deserve it, yourself! Treat yo’self!
