Nomadland (12A) Pembridge Film Night
We are the only Flicks in the Sticks community cinema to run in a pub – and probably the smallest Flicks venue too! The New Inn in Pembridge, in the heart of the Herefordshire countryside, is a lovely old pub on the famous Black and White Trail.
They kindly allow us to convert their function room into our mini-cinema on a couple of evenings each month during the season.
When the gypsum mine in Empire, Nevada closed down, the place became a ghost town with no work. Widowed Fern puts her life in a small van and travels the American West, working odd jobs and sharing experiences with fellow nomads on the fringes of conventional society.
The film that swept the board through the 2021 Award season (Best Film, Best Director, Best Leading Actress) is restrained, contemplative, and includes numerous non-actors – though you’ll have a job to guess who they are. A stunning road movie about a forgotten and often ageing underclass from vanishing working-class communities and a personal portrait of quiet but formidable resilience.
Never depressing, always looking forward, and the sort of people you’d really like to meet down the road.
