Whittington Castle

Welcome to Whittington Castle, a strikingly picturesque and romantic ruin steeped in much history, tales of bitter border warfare, romance and legend. An historic landmark which has welcomed visitors through its doors to this 13th century border fortress, and is also an increasingly popular venue for major historical re-enactments. The existing Castle is set in about 12 acres of ground and is the remains of a Norman home.

We believe this is the first castle in the UK which is owned and run by its local community when the 99 year lease was acquired to manage it. In 2007 The Trust was proud to re-open the Castle to visitors following completion of a restoration project which was funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Whittington Castle makes a perfect fairy tale wedding venue for civil wedding ceremonies with its ivy clad ruined walls, medieval moat complete with majestic swans and a twin towered Gatehouse. It is an ideal location to host a private function or meeting for up to thirty people and we can offer a range of themed birthday parties suitable for children aged four upwards.

There are many walks suitable for families around the grounds of the Castle. You can also follow public a footpath through the village and across the neighbouring field passing a stream and children’s play area.

Dogs are allowed into the grounds of the Castle but we do ask that they are kept on a lead and under control as this is a site for wildlife.
