Y Pass Fish & Chip Shop
Y Pass Fish & Chip Shop is a traditional fish and chips takeaway and eat in cafe.
Y-Pass Fish and Chip Shop is tucked up a secret alley in the bustling market town of Ledbury and has been a chip shop since the 1960’s when it was one of only two chippies in Ledbury.
Recently it’s been placed in the hands of Sue Brown who took over ownership in May 2019. Sue was looking for a change of career, wanting to run her own business and the well established Y-Pass seemed to be the perfect choice.
“I love the retro feel of the shop, the original Preston Thomas Range is still going strong. The shop is up a secluded alleyway so once inside you get the feeling of being in a hidden place. There is a secluded courtyard out the back which I hope to develop so that we can offer eating outside in the future.”
Sue and her team strive to serve the best quality food from sustainably sourced suppliers. They offer a wide range of fish such as Cod, Haddock, Hake and Pollock. They make their own fishcakes which have proved very popular. Also on offer is a varied vegetarian menu and they recently have developed their own vegan range such as vegan style fish and chips and vegan burgers all of which are made in house.
Responding to customer’s requests Y-Pass have now included a gluten free options to their menu, pre-ordering is recommended.
The fish is usually cooked to order meaning that it stays fresh, customers have commented that the batter is nice and light and the chips taste great. There is a seating area in the shop and additional seating in a small building adjacent to the building.
Builders Breakfasts are a recent addition to the menu, after talking with customers it became clear that a good old-fashioned fry up was missing in Ledbury. Breakfasts are available 6 days a week 11.00 – 2pm Monday to Friday and 9 am – 2pm Saturdays.
Y-Pass made the decision to become much more eco-aware. “we looked at all the products we use and have tried to replace plastic with compostable alternatives, we use paper carry out bags, compostable chip trays and sauce pots.” Where possible the ingredients are sourced locally, supporting local businesses and reducing transport impact on the environment.
The future of what and how we eat is changing, at Y-Pass they are embracing the changes as well as maintaining the traditional fish and chip supper we all associate as comforting food.
Cooked with care and attention.
We want to provide a range of food that suits all tastes, we want to cook sustainably sourced fish, quality locally grown potatoes, meat alternative tasty food and above all provide a reliable, friendly and value for money service to our regular and new customers.
We look forward to meeting you.
A hidden gem
A hidden gem down a little alleyway by Ledbury Market place, opposite the clock tower. Delicious fish with crispy tasty batter. I’ve never had Irish curry sauce before… delicious and a bit spicy… great with my chips. They have indoor seating and a lovely patio area… what a find!
Vegan fish and chips
I had an hour to kill and wandered up this alley. Imagine my surprise after 30 years of veganism with nothing to eat out on except chips when I spied the sign, through the window, that said vegan fish and chips and Jack fruit burger available. They offered to put on a clean batch of oil for me and gave me a glass of water and slice of lemon while I waited. It was brilliant! Banana blossom in batter, vegan mayonnaise, chips crispy not greasey. The staff were friendly and chatty and the tables clean. The other customers seemed like regulars and there was a good atmosphere. I was so happy I took home some of the “fish” to let my family try it. We’re all going there soon en masses for more. Thanks
A great find on a day out. Fish and chips cooked to perfection. Staff were very friendly and the place was spotless. What more could you ask for. Will be back very soon.
